Lung cancer
For November the Lake Almanor Cancer Fund is highlighting lung cancer. Lung cancer starts its growth in the cells of the lungs and is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, said the fund. People who smoke have the greatest risk of lung cancer and the risk increases with length of time and number of cigarettes smoked, but it can also develop in people who have never smoked.
“The symptoms of lung cancer don’t usually present until the cancer is advanced, so it is important to speak with your healthcare professional honestly about your smoking history so that they may consider yearly screening,” said the fund.
Signs and symptoms may include a persistent cough, chest pain, coughing up blood, change in voice, shortness of breath or wheezing. Advanced cases may also include bone pain, headache, unintentional weight loss or swelling in the face or neck.
Treatment usually begins with surgery to remove the lung cancer, followed by radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapies and immunotherapy.
“If you smoke or live with someone that smokes, it is important to stop,” said the fund. “Speak to your healthcare professional about aids that may help you.”
