The Lake Almanor Cancer Fund announces that in the month of September it is highlighting leukemia and lymphoma, blood cancers that differ in origin and how they affect the body. Leukemia is primarily a cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood. Lymphoma originates in the lymphatic system — lymph nodes, spleen and other lymphatic tissues — and often forms tumors.

The first symptoms may include fever, night sweats, swollen lymph nodes, bleeding or bruising easily, bone pain and fatigue. Diagnosis is made with a physical exam, blood test and bone marrow test. Treatment may include chemotherapy, targeted therapies, radiation and a bone marrow transplant. Risk factors include previous cancer treatment, genetic disorders, exposure to certain chemicals, smoking and a family history of cancer.

The Lake Almanor Cancer Fund reminds the community that assistance is available with cancer-related expenses. More information is available by emailing [email protected] or visiting Facebook.

Organizers also encourage the community to save the date for the group’s Dine and Donate event at Il Lago Pizza on Saturday, Nov. 2.

The Lake Almanor Cancer Fund is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing compassionate support and financial assistance to local families in the Almanor Basin community, including Chester, Westwood and Greenville, who are affected by cancer.
