The city of Portola is calling on the community to gather for something brand new: a community cleanup and scavenger hunt, set for Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8 a.m. to noon.
“This isn’t your ordinary cleanup,” say organizers. “To make the effort more fun, we teamed up with local businesses to turn this cleanup into a game.” While helping to collect rubbish and beautify the city, participants will also be on the lookout for “clean green” tickets hidden around cleanup areas. Each ticket can be redeemed for prizes donated by local businesses.
When the work is done, participants can enjoy a lunch hosted by the Rotary Club of Portola.
Organizers report that Portola is on a mission to earn the Clean California Community designation. Led by the California Department of Transportation, this statewide program rewards cities that keep their streets, parks and neighborhoods beautiful with access to grants and funding.
To qualify, Portola must check off a list of cleanup and community engagement activities. Organizers say this event is a big step toward that goal as well as the city’s drive to engage the community in activities that provide holistic benefits. As City Manager Ryan Bonk stated, “This effort is more than earning a Clean California Community designation. When we come together as a community for something that benefits us all, we build stronger connections and develop a shared sense of pride in our small city.”
Registration begins at 8 a.m. at Portola City Park at Gulling Street and Third Avenue. Early birds get doughnuts while they last. Participants should wear gloves, appropriate footwear and hats, and bring water. Organizers remind everyone, “It’s a hunt, not a race — safety first!”
Everyone is welcome. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. A waiver of liability will need to be signed on the day of the event to participate.
At noon, everyone will head back to the park for lunch and prize redemptions hosted by the Rotary Club of Portola. Questions and signup requests can be directed to [email protected].
