The Lassen County Animal Shelter would like to inform the public that we are currently unable to accept owner surrenders at this time. If you need to find a new home for your pet, there are several community resources available to help you safely and responsibly re-home your animal.
Local Facebook groups
Post in community pet and re-homing groups. Be sure to include clear photos, your pet’s name, age, temperament, and any important details to help potential adopters get to know them.
Radio Swap Shop – 93.3 JDX
Call (530) 257-TALK (8255) between 8 and 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday to advertise your pet on the air. You can also offer to send photos via text message to interested callers.
Lassen Humane Society courtesy posting
Write a short bio about your pet and include a few great photos. Email them to [email protected]. The Lassen Humane Society will post your pet on Peter.com to help you find them a new home. For more information, call (530) 257-4555.
Behavioral help
If your reason for rehoming involves a behavioral issue, consider contacting one of our local dog trainers. Sometimes, a little guidance can make all the difference and help you keep your beloved pet.
Community PSA about cats!
We’d like to remind our community that in Lassen County, cats are considered free-roaming animals. There are no local ordinances requiring cats to be kept indoors or contained and they are legally allowed to come and go as they please.
Across our county, there are many feral and community cat colonies. Unfortunately, many of these cats are not in the best health.
If you find a severely sick, injured or dying kitten or cat
Please understand that the Lassen County Animal Shelter no longer has the means to humanely euthanize animals.
These animals cannot be brought to the shelter.
If you find a cat or kitten in distress, you will need to take it directly to a veterinary clinic.
Please note the finder is responsible for the entire cost of care. However, based on financial need there is possible help available in certain cases. If a veterinarian determines the visit is an emergency, and an emergency voucher is approved by the Lassen Humane Society, they may be able to assist by paying up to $150 toward the bill.
For more information, call the Lassen Humane Society at (530) 257-4555
We know these situations can be difficult and emotional. Thank you for helping us care for our community’s animals with compassion and understanding
