The Nevada-California-Oregon Railway Historical Society is looking to set up headquarters in Alturas. The nonprofit has purchased the last remaining employee cottage built by the railway dating back to 1917.
The cottage that sits on Main Street in downtown Alturas has remained well preserved over time and will be developed into the society’s headquarters and future outdoor museum. The society is calling on the help of you and the community to raise funds to pay off the loan to begin to move forward in the project. The society is looking to have the cottage included in the national register of historic places joining the Elks Lodge and depot. Once completed the society can begin restoring the exterior of the building, then move to update the grounds with new parking and sidewalks, and also restore the first two cars on the grounds that rest behind the cottage for visitors to view and learn the history of the site.
