Unpredictable Conditions Plague the Route with Rockslides, Sinkholes, and a Looming Storm

Highway 70 is in a fluid situation as it opened, closed, and re-opened in one afternoon. Leaving some questioning, for how long this time.
Caltrans officials anticipated opening the highway Monday following a massive rockslide that occurred from recent rainfall that damaged guardrails.

Crews were able to remove the large boulders, with an announcement that the highway was opened to one-way traffic controls later yesterday afternoon, a day later than expected. Yet not long after, the state route was closed yet again after the discovery of a large sinkhole near 6 feet long developed in the westbound lane at Post Mile 6, just east of Storrie.

Crews worked diligently and, despite all odds, re-opened the highway before nightfall. You will encounter one-way traffic control in the Cresta area and just east of Storrie.

An impactful winter storm is arriving today, persisting through Friday that could present more challenges to your Highway 70 travel.
SR 70 has been impacted by land, mud, and rockslides for over a year, often shutting down the highway for weeks on end.
