A snow plow damaged a fire hydrant in Portola, causing the city to shut off water and make emergency repairs. The hydrant was located on Gulling and Plumas street, where deep snow and ice challenged crews who worked through the evening. Those repairs were expected to be complete by midnight.

A boil water notice will be going out to homes in the Portola area as water samples are being prepared to be sent to a lab for testing. Plumas Unified School District Superintendent Bill Roderick announced there will be no school for students attending C. Roy Carmichael Elementary and Portola Junior-Senior High School.
