Elephant Fire Crews Shift to Mop-Up as Updated Mapping Changes Containment Figure

Firefighters on the Elephant Fire made significant progress Wednesday, successfully completing planned burning operations that allowed crews to transition their efforts to securing containment lines and mopping up remaining hotspots.

Although the fire’s containment dropped to 31 percent in Thursday’s update, fire officials emphasized that the decrease does not reflect a loss of progress on the ground. Instead, the lower containment figure is the result of updated mapping that changed the fire’s perimeter.

With firing operations complete, crews are continuing to strengthen containment lines and extinguish lingering hot spots as suppression efforts move into the next phase.
