Eagleville Fire Department Faces Financial Crisis as Community Rallies for Support

Eagleville’s volunteer fire department is facing a significant financial challenge, with a current funding gap of approximately $3,000. Local resident Sara Sutton has initiated a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised $4,125 so far. However, Sutton has warned that if donations do not increase, the campaign may be closed, jeopardizing the funding necessary to keep the fire engine operational.

The department, a small nonprofit, manages two fire stations, the community hall, and the town church. It relies on donations and an annual barbecue event for income, but rising costs have created an annual shortfall of around $10,000. A major expense is the coverage required for every volunteer under the State Compensation program. Without this funding, fire calls would have to wait for assistance from a mutual-aid crew located about twenty miles away in Cedarville, potentially increasing homeowners’ insurance rates in the area.

This situation reflects a broader crisis faced by rural volunteer departments in Northern California, where limited tax bases and rising wildfire risks strain resources. Sutton emphasizes that donations are tax-deductible through the department’s 501(c)(3) status. Community members can contribute by searching for “Eagleville Volunteer Fire Department” on GoFundMe or by leaving a check at the Eagleville Post Office.
