This June, the UC Cooperative Extension will present the “Cows to Carrots Onscreen” program, featuring a film series and panel discussion focused on land stewardship and its impact on the local food supply. The events will take place in Lassen, Modoc, and Siskiyou counties.
The program includes a professionally-produced film followed by a panel of local land stewards who will discuss the film’s content, cover topics related to land stewardship and soil health, and answer audience questions. It is open to anyone interested in agriculture, land management, or the local food supply.
The program is free and will be held on three occasions in different locations: June 11 at the Niles Theater in Alturas, June 12 at the Historic Susanville Railway Depot in Susanville, and June 26 at the Avery Theater in Etna. Each event is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. and conclude by approximately 7:30 p.m.
The film “Livestock on the Land,” produced by the Practical Farmers of Iowa, has been selected for screening. It highlights how farmers are creating a regenerative agricultural network by focusing on animal care. Additionally, short films and previews will be shown, including “You Just Can’t See Them From the Road” by the California Rangeland Trust and the four-part documentary series “Roots So Deep.” Attendees can request a voucher for streaming access to all episodes of “Roots So Deep.”
This initiative is backed by funding from the Renewable Resources Extension Act through the University of California. Laurie Wayne, a UC Cooperative Extension Advisor, emphasizes the importance of healthy soil for biodiversity and production, linking it to the region’s capacity to provide local food.
The program also aims to discuss the social and economic advantages of land stewardship, illustrating the connection between soil health and the resilience of rural communities. Project coordinator Jenny Kapp notes the unique opportunity for community members to engage with the films and experts in their own neighborhoods.
No tickets are necessary, but registration is encouraged to help with venue preparation. All community members are invited to attend, regardless of registration status.
