On July 5, 2025, City Administrative/Engineering staff responded to the scene of the
Memorial Park Grandstand Fire. A preliminary damage assessment was completed, and
the City’s insurance provider was contacted on the day of the incident. On Sunday July
6, 2025, the City’s insurance rep filed a loss claim to initiate the recovery process.
Lassen Community College and City representatives are working closely together on
developing a short-term scope of work to get the Frank Ernaga Ballfield back in operation
by the middle of August. At the moment, the focus is on site clean-up, back stop
rehabilitation (including replacing the netting), re-establishing electrical service to the
facility, and replacement of damaged turf.
City staff are operating under the emergency provisions of the City’s purchasing
ordinance to expedite the completion of the short-term scope of work. The City’s objective
is to complete the short-term work within 30 days. However, the presence of hazardous
materials in the debris and/or material lead times may cause delays that are outside of
the City’s control.
Updates will be provided at regular intervals as more information becomes available.
