The City of Portola is currently searching for a new City Manager, as Interim Manager Jon Kennedy is preparing to step down by the end of this week. Kennedy assumed the role over two years ago when he was asked by the late Mayor Tom Cooley to step in.

Reflecting on his time, Kennedy recalls Mayor Cooley as the most brilliant public servant he has encountered, reminiscing that he took the role at the Mayor’s encouragement. After Cooley’s passing, Kennedy agreed to continue his interim role. However, he feels that he has accomplished what Cooley wanted to see accomplished for the City of Portola, including helping to see through establishing the new fire protection district, among other tasks. Kennedy now says he has had to make the personal decision to leave.

Kennedy emphasized that he never viewed himself as a long-term City Manager and intended to serve as interim until a replacement was found. He is hopeful the City of Portola will find an adequate candidate. He expressed his fondness for Mayor Morton and Council Member Pieler, whom he will miss.
