City of Alturas Urges Residents to Avoid Flushing Harmful Items

The City of Alturas Wastewater Facility is reminding residents to be mindful of what they flush or pour down household drains, noting that improper disposal can damage the sewer system and lead to costly problems for both homeowners and the city.

Officials said anyone connected to the city sewer system shares responsibility for maintaining it. Flushing inappropriate items can cause sewer backups inside homes and contribute to environmental contamination through sewer releases.

Items that should not be flushed include cleaning wipes, disposable diapers, feminine hygiene products, cotton balls and swabs, unused medications, bandages and first aid materials, drug-related items, facial tissue and condoms.

The city also advises residents not to pour grease, fats or oils down drains, as these substances can build up in pipes and create maintenance issues. Wastewater from toilets, sinks, showers, washing machines and dishwashers all flows through pipes into the city sewer system, making proper disposal practices essential.

City officials said being aware of what goes down drains can help prevent unnecessary sewer problems and protect the overall system.
