The Alturas Fire Department is announcing the end of the burn suspension on October 24, 2022 at 6:00 am for the Alturas City Limits.
Open burning permits are required from May 1st until December 1st of each year.
WARNING
The permit issued does not relieve the user of any legal responsibility for the safe use of fire or allow burning to be done in violation of
any State, Local or Federal laws and regulations restricting the use of fire.
Permittee may be held liable for suppression costs for any fire that escapes your control regardless of what caused it to escape. The Fire
Department is entitled to reimbursement for the public funds which were expended.
FIRE PERMIT REQUIREMENTS
1. AS PER STATE LAW, BURN BARRELS are prohibited within the Alturas City Limits.
2. Open burning permits are required from May Ist until December Ist of each year. Burn permits may be rescinded at any time
as determined by the fire prevention officer or the chief of the department Call (530) 283-4500 to acquire a permit. Fees for
permit are $10.00 for the year.
3. Fire Permits must be purchased from the Alturas City Fire Department. All other permits are
void in the Alturas city limits.
4. Fire Permits are for burning of natural vegetation such as cut weeds, cut grass, cut brush, leaves, and tree trimmings no larger
than 2″ inches in diameter and unprocessed lumber. NO OTHER MATERIALS ARE ALLOWED TO BE BURNED.
BURNING HOURS ARE FROM 6AM UNTIL 12 NOON ALL YEAR.
These hours are in effect 365 days a year. The fire is to be dead out at 12:00pm (noon) and not allowed to smolder.
5. Inspection of the site and material to be burned is required before a permit is issued.
6. No burning shall be undertaken unless weather conditions (particularly wind) are such that burning can be considered safe.
7. Permits may be suspended at any time due to extreme weather conditions or other hazardous conditions.
IMPORTANT BURNING PERMIT TERMS
Maximum pile size is four (4) feet in diameter.
An area of ten (10) feet surrounding the outer edge of the burn pile must be free and clear of all flammable materials and
vegetation.
An adult must be in attendance with a shovel until fire is dead out.
Water supply must be present at burn site at all times.
No burning shall be undertaken unless weather conditions (particularly wind) are such that burning can be considered safe.
