The Rotary Club of Chester, Rotary District 5190, reports that it will be holding two contests for students: a speech contest Feb. 25 and a music contest March 3.

Speech contest

This contest is open to all students in grades nine through 12 who attend school and reside within the District 5190 boundaries. This year’s theme is “Unite for good: Together, we make dreams come true.”

The annual Chester Rotary Speech Contest is set for Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 5:30 p.m. This represents the first level of the contest, the local club level. Winners at this level move on to the area contest, held before April 15. The final contest, at the district level, will be held at the district conference May 2, 9 a.m. at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.

Students must be available for all three levels to enter the competition. Only the winner at each level advances to the next level.

Cash prizes at the district level are $1,000 for first place, $750 for second, $500 for third and $50 for fourth. Contest rules are available at local schools and Rotary clubs, and official rules can also be found on the Rotary District 5190 website.

Music contest

Chester Rotary invites solo instrumentalists to compete in its annual youth instrumental music contest. The local club level contest is set for Tuesday, March 3, 5:30 p.m. at Lake Almanor Community Church, 2610 Highway A13. Performances are three to eight minutes long.

The winner moves on to the area competition, from which the winners compete at the district conference on May 2 in Reno. The grand prize at the third level of competition, the district contest, is $1,000.
