Lassen National Forest reminds us that Celebrating July 4 outdoors is a cherished national tradition, and the USDA Forest Service is excited to welcome visitors this Friday. However, it’s important to remember that fireworks and pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited on public lands—this applies to every forest and campsite, every day.
With a record number of visitors expected at the 18 national forests, it’s essential to leave fireworks to city celebrations and professional displays. Nearly 90% of wildfires are caused by human activities, making it crucial for Californians to plan their outdoor activities carefully to enjoy the beautiful starry skies safely.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable Independence Day, consider the following tips:
- Check the Lassen National Forest website for any alerts regarding sites and trails, as some may be blocked due to lingering snowpack, flooding, or road damage.
- Have alternative destinations ready in case an area is temporarily closed or too crowded.
- Be cautious around water. Many people will be on boats during the holiday, but there may still be runoff from snow in high-altitude areas. Avoid entering cold, fast-moving water and never attempt to rescue someone by entering the water; instead, throw something that floats and call 911.
- Recreate responsibly by being aware of any fire restrictions before starting a campfire. Carry the necessary tools to extinguish a flame and report any fires by calling 911.
- Please note that except for the Old Station Visitor Center, Lassen National Forest offices will be closed on July 4 in observance of the Independence Day federal holiday.
- Finally, make sure to know before you go.
