Cedarville Fire Department news release regarding power strips.
🔌 Power Strip or Surge Protector — Do You Know the Difference?
They look almost identical on the shelf… but they are NOT the same thing — and knowing the difference can protect your home and electronics.
🟡 Power Strip:
A power strip simply gives you extra outlets. It does not protect against power surges, lightning strikes, or voltage spikes. It’s basically an outlet extender.
🟢 Surge Protector:
A surge protector gives you extra outlets AND helps protect electronics from sudden voltage spikes that can damage TVs, computers, gaming systems, and appliances.
⚡ What should you look for?
If it doesn’t list a joule rating, it’s probably just a power strip.
The joule rating tells you how much surge energy it can absorb before failing.
Protecting your electronics can be as simple as choosing the right device at the store.
When in doubt — read the label.
