CDFW Seeks Hunter Assistance in Mountain Quail Study

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has reached out to hunters for their invaluable aid in the ongoing Mountain Quail study, part of the California Conservation Genomics Project. Building upon a project that began in the fall of 2022, CDFW urges hunters to contribute mountain quail samples to enhance the understanding of genetic diversity and population structure within the species.

Mountain quail (Oreortyx pictus), known for their elusive nature in rugged, forested landscapes, pose a challenge for observers and hunters alike. CDFW’s study aims to uncover vital information about the species’ genetics and subpopulations, as isolated groups could face risks such as inbreeding and susceptibility to diseases and environmental changes.

Hunters are encouraged to provide whole birds whenever possible. Yet if not possible, wings or specific organs can be submitted for DNA extraction. CDFW emphasizes proper handling techniques to avoid contamination.

Interested hunters can contact CDFW’s Upland Game Program by email at [email protected] to participate in the study.

The initiative aligns with the upcoming mountain quail hunting season, starting September 9 and running through October 20, 2023, across designated zones.
