In a quiet unannounced ceremony on June 30th, the American Flag that flew above the California Correctional Center was retired, marking the official closure of the prison. The ceremony was planned by the few remaining staff at the prison.

The city of Susanville fought a year-long battle to keep the facility open, eventually losing that fight on September 8th, when the courts ruled in favor of the state and CDCR. The judge cited that the city could not prove any ‘substantiative rights’ were taken away through the rewriting of the prison closure code, violating constitutional law.

The prison was opened in 1963, creating a large correctional family over the decades.
