With winter weather setting in Caltrans will close several rest areas for the season. If traveling through the region you are advised to plan accordingly. As of October 31st District 2 says the following rest areas will not reopen until the spring, these include the Hillcrest Rest Area on State Route 299, in Shasta county. On SR 70 in Plumas, Massack and Lester T. Davis Rest Areas outside Quincy and Portola. Shingletown Safety Roadside Rest Area (State Route 44, east of Shingletown, Shasta County), and Lake Almanor Rest Area (State Route 36, 4.3 miles east of Chester, Plumas County)

These closures will allow maintenance crews to focus their time and efforts on the roadways over the winter months. Hazardous conditions from ice and snow are present in these areas during the winter season, which can also lend to plumbing issues at these facilities.

The district says the anticipated reopening date for these rest areas will be May 1, 2024:
