Four sites will open for your excavation beginning July 1st through Labor day weekend. You can get one day permits and bring up to two 5 gallon buckets to bring home your collection. You can only use hand tools to retrieve the obsidian. You can get up to 3 permits each year. Visit the Modoc National Forest office in Alturas to get yours, located at 225 W. 8th St. in Alturas, Calif. Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Valid picture identification is required for each individual seeking permits.
