If you are headed to public lands to enjoy the holiday, BLM officials remind you to leave the fireworks at home and practice fire safety regarding campfires.
Emily Ryan, manager of the BLM Eagle Lake Field Office, noted that abundant grasses, resulting from a wet spring and two years of growth, are drying quickly and can fuel rapidly spreading wildfires under hot, dry, and windy conditions. She urges everyone to prioritize fire safety when visiting the outdoors.
Ryan stressed that it is illegal to possess or use fireworks, including “Safe and Sane” devices sold at fireworks stands, on public lands as well as national forests. In Lassen County, fireworks sold at fireworks stands can be used only within the Susanville city limits.
Outdoor recreation visitors should:
– Obtain a free campfire permit and keep campfires small, fully extinguishing them before leaving.
– Be aware of local fire restrictions.
– Stay on established roads and trails to avoid igniting dry vegetation with hot exhaust systems.
– Use chainsaws only in the cool morning hours with proper equipment and have a shovel and fire extinguisher nearby. Operating hours may be restricted during fire season.
