The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding an abandoned fisherman’s boat, possibly an overboard fisherman, in the privately-owned Round Valley Reservoir 18 miles from Susanville.
Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, along with Lassen County Search and Rescue Team with two divers from both divisions, performed a rescue and search utilizing the fisherman’s “fishing Graph” located inside his boat. Cal-Fire assisted the search by conducting an overflight helicopter. Due to the water visibility being less than two feet and the evening becoming nightfall, the search stopped.
The Lassen County Sheriffs’ Office, along with Cal-Fire, Butte County Sheriffs’ Office, Plumas County Sheriffs Office, and Lassen County Search and Rescue team, continued the search over several days utilizing the helicopter, divers, an HOV remote-controlled unit for underwater equipped with a sonar and video system along with a human remains detection canine from California Office of Emergency Services searched endlessly with no success of locating the missing body due to the continuous weather thunderstorms affecting the capability to continue the search.
A call came in from someone claiming the body had surfaced onto the reservoir’s South end. Sheriff Growdon expressed the need for expanding the Department’s equipment and capabilities for search and rescue, along with his gratitude towards other Departments.
The victim’s body, identified as Ross Alan Kline, age 62, from Reno, Nevada, was referred to the Washoe County Medical Examiners for the cause of death.
