BLM Eases Fire Restrictions with Caution

The Bureau of Land Management says it’s okay to have campfires outside of designated recreation areas. Officials have lifted fire restrictions on public lands in Lassen Plumas and Modoc counties. Yet, if you plan to have a campfire outside of designated areas, you will need a permit before building one. You can get yours free from any BLM, CALFIRE, or Forest Service office or online.

Derek Wilson, manager of the BLM’s northern division, stressed that despite the cooler fall weather, continued caution must be observed with all uses of fire.

Year-round fire restrictions remain in place for BLM-managed public lands in California. This requires a five-foot diameter area to be cleared to bare soil and free of overhead flammable material before a campfire is used. It also states anyone using a campfire must have a round-point shovel with a handle at least 35 inches long nearby.

More information about the use of fire on public lands is available from the BLM Applegate and Eagle Lake Field Offices.
