The Office of Assemblymember Heather Hadwick reports an event in August brought legislators and rural law enforcement leaders together in Sacramento. Members of the California State Sheriffs’ Association‚ California Police Chiefs Association and Peace Officers Research Association of California gathered for meetings‚ policy workshops and a reception.
Hadwick said she appreciated the opportunity to meet with Lassen County Sheriff John McGarva‚ Plumas County Sheriff Chad Hermann and Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue during the event. Discussion topics included:
- Human‑wildlife conflict
- Implementation of Proposition 36‚ which increased penalties for repeated drug and theft offenses
- Growing challenges facing county jails
- Legislation that could make it harder for local law enforcement to protect communities
“Rural law enforcement agencies face unique challenges — from vast geographic areas and limited staffing to tight budgets and increasing demands,” said Hadwick. “I will continue listening to the men and women on the front lines and fighting to ensure they have the resources‚ tools and support they need to keep our communities safe.”
