The Rotary Club of Alturas hosted the annual Kids Fish Derby at Pine Creek Reservoir, a cherished Modoc County tradition. Families arrived early on Saturday morning, enthusiastic and ready to fish for freshly stocked trout. The contest kicked off at 7:30 a.m., with children excitedly sharing gear and experiences while waiting for bites.
The event is designed exclusively for children in elementary school or younger from Modoc County, allowing adults to assist only with baiting and casting. This structure promotes independence and a hands-on approach for young anglers.
Participants enjoyed complimentary hot dogs, chips, and bottled water provided by Holiday Market, ensuring they stayed energized throughout the day. Local businesses generously donated prizes, ensuring every child left with a reward, regardless of their fishing success.
Highlights from the day included Paige Mason catching the largest fish at 1.6 pounds and Raiden winning the boys’ division. Daxton Morris-Wright was among the six lucky anglers who won a new bike, courtesy of local sponsors.
The reservoir had been stocked with catchable-sized trout ahead of the event, although public access remained open due to state regulations. Historical records indicate that concerns about adult fishing impacting the children’s catch have existed for decades, yet the Rotary Club and the community continue to uphold the event’s spirit.
Amber Ander, a former participant who now brings her children, noted the evolution of the derby. She observed that every child now receives a prize, enhancing the experience for those who may not catch fish. Ander also appreciated the increased parental involvement compared to her childhood experiences.
Despite a low catch rate this year, the event fostered lasting memories for families, providing a break from daily routines. The Rotary Club expressed gratitude to all sponsors, volunteers, and community members involved, with plans for next year’s derby already in the works, aiming for even more fish, prizes, and cherished moments.
