On February 1, 2026, the Alturas Police Department responded to a report of a possible explosive device located inside a vehicle at the Garden Apartments, located at 310 E. McDowell Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers located a suspicious device along with a note indicating a possible explosion. After a thorough assessment, it was determined that the device was not capable of exploding. While the device posed no actual explosive threat, it was clearly intended to intimidate or terrorize the owner of the vehicle. The Alturas Police Department is actively investigating and is requesting the public’s assistance. Investigators are seeking anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity or who has surveillance cameras facing the Garden Apartments parking lot. The timeframe of interest is 8:00 p.m. on January 31, 2026, through 8:00 a.m. on February 1, 2026.
At this time, the Alturas Police Department believes this was an isolated and targeted incident. There is no information at this time indicating a continued or broader threat to residents or the surrounding community. Public safety remains the department’s highest priority, and residents are encouraged to remain aware but not alarmed.
