Portola Junior-Senior High School’s Rotary Interact Club, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Portola, invites the community to participate in this year’s third annual Community Read event. The event features “Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood” by Trevor Noah.

“This powerful and engaging text offers insight into resilience, identity and global perspectives — making it a meaningful read for students and community members alike,” say organizers. “Join us in reading, learning and making a global impact together.”

Books will be available for pickup at the Portola High front office beginning March 31. Spring break is from April 3 through 12; books can be picked up before or after the break.

The Community Read will culminate in a special community dinner and fundraiser May 29 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Portola High library. This event will support efforts to fight schistosomiasis in Africa. This deadly parasitic disease impacts over 80 million children and causes approximately 200,000 deaths each year.

Organizers invite guests to enjoy a South African curry and rice dining experience, along with trivia, a book discussion and a guest presentation from a travel nurse. The suggested donation is $10. All proceeds will go directly toward treatment and eradication efforts. Those interested can RSVP online for the event.
