Train Derails Near Blairsden- Spills Coal into Feather River

A Union Pacific train derailed in the Feather River Canyon early Sunday. The cause remains under investigation.

A total of 14 railcars transporting coal spilled into the Middle Fork of the Feather River as a result of the derailment. How much coal was spilled remains undetermined, but clean-up efforts have been underway. The Office of Spill Prevention and OES are assessing the environmental impacts.

The derailment happened near Highway 70 and Camp Layman Road in Blairsden.
