Child Advocates of Lassen County marked a crucial step in aiding abused children with the opening of the new Mikailia Center. Lassen County District Attorney Melyssah Rios emphasized the need to relocate the center away from the busy district offices, providing a comforting and peaceful environment for victims and their families, a project she has pursued over the last five years. The new site located at 1410 Chestnut Street was secured through grant funding and the Lassen County Office of Education, who were the previous tenants.

Since the program’s inception, Rios shares that 175 victims have passed through thier doors, and each has been represented at the new Advocacy Center by a butterfly that adorns the hall as you walk into the interview room—a symbol of transformation.

Once inside the interview room, a soft shade of lilac welcomes you with the words, “You’re already strong, be brave,” a quote from Mikailia, the center’s namesake- a local victim of abuse in the 1980s, who continues to be an advocate for children in the county whose story and message is framed in the center’s lobby. The only items in this room are two lounge chairs, a small table accompanied by pop-it fidget toys, and two Teddy Bears. Here is where Rios says trained interviewers conduct sessions following strict guidelines to ensure integrity in court proceedings.

A discreetly located observation room allows law enforcement, social workers, and prosecutors to monitor these interviews without disturbing victims or families. The room features a display of framed booking photos of convicted offenders, reinforcing the center’s commitment to justice.

The new Mikailia Advocacy Center aims to provide a safe haven for abused children to share their experiences, fostering healing and accountability for perpetrators.
