Lassen County Prepares for Housing Element Update Amidst Projected Population Decline

Lassen County has a projected declining population; reports indicate that the housing needs, as a result, are also less.

Over the last several months, you may have seen the multiple surveys and outreach by county staff toward the Housing Element Website.

One of the final steps before state submission is a secondary workshop that will detail survey results and other data collected by staff to the board of supervisors tomorrow during their regular scheduled session to complete the update to the County’s Housing Element, a plan to meet the housing needs of everyone in the community mandated by the state on local governments in the late ’60s. These local governments must meet this requirement by adopting housing plans as part of their “general plan.”

A Few of the results indicated that the vast majority of survey respondents said they think more duplexes and accessory dwelling units are needed in the county and cited that housing conditions are a top concern regarding the need for rehabilitation efforts on many existing homes in the county.

These results and more details on the draft housing housing strategy will be provided to the supervisor this Tuesday.

To attend the conversation, the board will meet at 9 am in the supervisor’s Chambers on Nevada Street in Susanville. An agenda can be found at Lassencounty.org.
