The Susanville Police Department tickets 17 drivers for use of cell phones while driving. The department conducted a distracted driving awareness traffic enforcement operation with the goal to educate and deter people from using their phones while driving. California enacted the hands free law in 2008 yet many drivers will still hold their phones while on speaker mode. The department urges you if you need to make a call or pull up directions that you pull over. If you get caught on a second offense you could get a point added to your license. April is distracted driving awareness month.
