Thousands of rural homes were dropped by insurers after years of massive wildfires, like the million acre Dixie Fire that plague the state. Yet California is looking to start a system to reduce the risk of wildfires in older homes that includes hardening homes, their immediate surroundings and their communities. Houses that have been built since 2008 already have these measures in place but Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara says 40% of the insurance market is now offering these discounts to homeowners taking hardening measures. That is a significant increase from 7% just three years ago. These new wildfire standards for homes are a step in the right direction for the many victims of the historical wildfires the state has recently experienced.
