Portola City Council Addresses Liberty Utilities Electric Bill Concerns and Resident Actions

SHARE NOW

Many Portola residents feel frustrated by their electric bills from Liberty Utilities. The City shares these concerns because it also relies on Liberty for power.

The City Council will discuss Liberty’s rates on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:00 PM at City Hall, 35 Third Avenue. This meeting will help residents understand the situation and explore possible actions.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) sets Liberty’s rates. The City cannot lower, freeze, or reject rate increases. It also cannot change Liberty’s billing methods.

City staff recommends sharing clear information with residents on how to address their concerns. They plan to send letters to the CPUC, Liberty, and state legislators. The City will also request Liberty to hold a community meeting in Portola.

You can take action now by signing up for CPUC notices about Liberty cases. Check with Liberty to see if you qualify for CARE discounts or if you are on the best rate for your home. If you have billing issues, file a complaint with the CPUC. Reach out to Senator Dahle and Assemblymember Hadwick to voice your concerns.

After the City Council meeting, the City may post updates on its website and Facebook page for residents to follow.
