Sixteen community volunteers joined Alturas Rotarians Saturday morning to improve the John Cummings Memorial Junior Livestock Grounds.
Volunteers came from High Country Back Country Horsemen, Modoc High School FFA, and the local community. They worked alongside Rotarians on a city-approved project.
The team used crowbars, hammers, a tractor, and a backhoe to remove 646 feet of old wood fencing and posts. They cleared debris and leveled the arena’s perimeter. The space will soon get new heavy-duty metal panels and posts funded by Rotary.
The upgrades will improve safety for youth participants and spectators. They will also extend the facility’s lifespan and allow more regional equestrian and agricultural events to return.
The grounds host Modoc County’s annual 4-H and Future Farmers of America livestock shows. The arena also serves as a year-round spot for riding, horse training, and livestock practice. In the past, it welcomed horse shows, gymkhanas, bronc riding, bull riding, and community events.
The workday showed how much local groups can achieve when they collaborate. Rotary members thanked those who brought heavy equipment, skills, and labor. They plan more upgrades in future phases.
