Feather River College Football delivered a dominant performance on the road Saturday, defeating Merced College 56–20 at Stadium 76.
The Golden Eagles scored in every quarter, built a 29–10 halftime advantage and finished with 511 yards of total offense. Feather River controlled the ground game with 346 rushing yards, averaging 9.1 yards per carry, while limiting Merced to 84 rushing yards.
Sophomore quarterback Kayden Leaf of Red Bluff, California, led the offensive attack. Leaf completed 12 of 21 passes for 154 yards and added 83 rushing yards on 10 carries. He scored three times on the ground, including a 44-yard touchdown late in the opening quarter that gave Feather River a lead it would not surrender.
Sophomore wide receiver Marcellus Clay of Boise, Idaho, contributed in several phases of the game. Clay caught six passes for 86 yards, rushed for 25 yards and returned two kickoffs for 80 yards—including a 60-yard return—to finish with 191 all-purpose yards.
Freshman kicker Donovan Damiano of Spokane, Washington, was perfect on the afternoon. Damiano converted field goals from 27 and 30 yards and made all six of his extra-point attempts, accounting for 12 points.
Defensively, freshman defensive back Mafua Matthews-Mafua of Las Vegas, Nevada, led the Golden Eagles with nine total tackles, including one tackle for loss. The Feather River defense held Merced to 265 total yards, recorded two sacks and added a second-quarter safety.
Feather River scored seven rushing touchdowns in the victory. In addition to Leaf’s three scores, Braden Dunham, Nason Rodriguez, Deshon Moore and Jamariyen Farmer each reached the end zone. Rodriguez supplied one of the game’s biggest plays with a 61-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The Golden Eagles return home Saturday, Sept. 19, to host Hartnell College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Feather River College.
