U.S. Forest Service Modoc National Forest reminds us with the Modoc District Fair, Burning Man traffic, and holiday weekend approaching, local, state, and federal fire agencies remind travelers that a quick vehicle and trailer check can help prevent roadside fires.
Wildfire prevention starts before you hit the road:
Check tire condition and pressure, including your spare. Check brakes and replace worn brake components before traveling. Make sure your trailer is roadworthy and not overloaded. Check bearings, hubs, axles, and wiring. Use safety pins on your hitch and secure trailer chains so they don’t drag and spark. Properly secure ramps, equipment, and loads. Check your mirrors often for tire blowouts and stop safely if there’s a problem. Avoid driving or parking in dry grass. On long trips, stop periodically to check tires, wheels, chains, and your trailer. It only takes one spark to start a wildfire.Whether you’re headed to the fair, Burning Man, or traveling for the holiday weekend, take a few minutes to make sure your vehicle and trailer are road-ready.
