Redding is getting ready to welcome athletes from around the world as the IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California triathlon takes place Sunday, August 16 — but drivers should be prepared for temporary road closures and delays.
The biking portion of the race will impact several roads throughout the Redding area Sunday morning, with closures beginning as early as 6:30 a.m. and continuing into the afternoon in some locations.
Race officials say drivers should plan ahead and allow extra time for travel. Some routes will require detours, while others will have slower traffic as cyclists move through the area.
Major closures include sections of Rock Creek Road, Iron Mountain Road, Keswick Dam Road, Oasis Road, Bear Mountain Road, Dry Creek Road, Old Alturas Road, Boyle Road, Old 44 Drive, Airport Road, Cypress Avenue, and Park Marina Drive.
The longest closures are expected along Airport Road and portions of the route near Highway 44, which could remain impacted until about 1 p.m.
Event organizers are encouraging residents to check the official IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California traffic impact map before traveling Sunday morning and to plan alternate routes if needed.
The race brings hundreds of athletes, along with family members, volunteers, and spectators, to the Redding community. Organizers say the event is an opportunity to showcase the region while welcoming visitors throughout race week, which runs August 13 through August 16.
