While the National Park Service has not announced a formal migration event, the phenomenon is not unusual for Lassen. The park is home to the California tortoiseshell butterfly, a species known to gather in large numbers at higher elevations. According to the National Park Service, the butterflies can sometimes be seen by the thousands, especially on mountain peaks where wind currents carry them.
Recent visitor reports describe seeing an abundance of butterflies while hiking near Lassen’s peaks and lakes, creating a memorable experience for those exploring the park this summer.
The last population explosion or mass migration was in 2019.
