Alturas Police Department Responds to Serious Dog Attack
On July 15, 2026, at approximately 8:1 1 p.m., the Alturas Police Department responded to a reported dog attack in the 500 block of West Fourth Street.
A 61-year-old woman was walking eastbound on West Fourth Street when she was attacked without provocation by two dogs. The victim sustained serious injuries consistent with an attack involving multiple dogs. She received medical treatment and has since returned home, where she continues to recover
Both dogs involved in the incident have been captured and placed in the custody of Alturas Animal Control. ‘The incident remains under review, and appropriate enforcement and administrative action will be taken in accordance with applicable law.
Aggressive and dangerous dogs will not be tolerated within the City of Alturas. Members of our community should be able to walk through their neighborhoods, enjoy public spaces, and spend time outdoors without fearing an attack by an uncontrolled or vicious animal.
As Chief of Police, I will take swift and appropriate action to help ensure Alturas remains a safe place to live, work, and play. Dog owners have a responsibility to properly secure, control, and supervise their animals at all times. Owners may be held accountable when their failure to do so places members of the public at risk,
