Feather River College Athletics reports the Golden Eagles softball program was “incredibly successful and rewarding for all,” as it capped a remarkable championship season with a conference title, regional playoff success and statewide recognition. Led by head coach Meredith Aragon, the Golden Eagles captured the Golden Valley Conference championship, hosted a first-round California Community College Athletic Association Northern California regional playoff series, swept Fresno City College in two straight games to advance in postseason play, and earned recognition throughout the conference and Northern California following a remarkable season.
The Golden Eagles finished the regular season with a 17-3 conference record, securing the GVC championship and earning the No. 8 seed in the 3C2A Northern California regional playoffs. Their success throughout the spring earned Feather River the opportunity to host playoff softball in Quincy, where the Golden Eagles delivered in front of their home fans, said FRC.
In the opening round of the regional playoffs, Feather River swept Fresno City College in consecutive games, extending an already memorable season while simultaneously helping head coach Aragon reach a pair of significant career milestones. The victories marked the 300th and 301st wins of Aragon’s head coaching career, further cementing her legacy as a coaching great, said FRC.
Coaches said the championship season was fueled by outstanding leadership, exceptional team chemistry and contributions throughout the roster. Among the season’s most impressive accomplishments was Feather River producing both the GVC player of the year and the GVC pitcher of the year.
Sophomore shortstop and Quincy native McKynlee Gay was named GVC player of the year after putting together one of the most impressive offensive seasons in the conference. Gay hit .487 while collecting 73 hits, scoring 56 runs and stealing 13 bases. She was later recognized as an all-state north selection, further validating her place among the top players in Northern California.
In the circle, sophomore Brittney Byram earned GVC pitcher of the year honors following another dominant season. Byram finished the year with 24 victories and more than 200 strikeouts while serving as the backbone of the Golden Eagles pitching staff. She also earned all-state north recognition and concluded her Feather River career with 41 victories and 381 career strikeouts.
In addition, sophomore Faith Helmandollar earned all-northern team honors after another exceptional season at the plate. Helmandollar hit .447 with 55 hits, 50 RBIs and five home runs while helping lead the Golden Eagles to the conference title. Her recognition adds to an already remarkable Feather River career that included being named GVC most valuable player during her freshman season in 2025.
Coaches say the Golden Eagles’ success was built upon depth throughout the lineup and was reflected in the program’s impressive collection of additional honors.

The accomplishments of the Golden Eagles were especially meaningful because of the leadership provided by a talented sophomore class that helped establish and sustain a championship culture within the program, said coaches. They say Gay, Byram, Helmandollar, Lee and their fellow sophomores leave behind a legacy defined by conference championships, postseason success, academic achievement, leadership and a commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
Lee, a first team all-conference selection, concluded her career as one of the program’s most productive offensive players. Over two seasons she accumulated 95 career hits, 15 home runs and 77 RBIs while serving as a leader both in the dugout and on the field.
“Together, this sophomore class helped guide Feather River softball through one of its most successful periods in recent memory and laid a strong foundation for future Golden Eagles teams,” said FRC. “While championships and awards will forever be part of the story, the 2026 Golden Eagles will ultimately be remembered for much more than statistics. They represented Feather River College with pride, resilience and determination while creating lasting memories for teammates, coaches, families and fans.”
Assistant coach of the year
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announces nine member coaches have been honored as the 2026 assistant coaches of the year in their categories. Feather River College assistant coach Marco Aragon received the assistant coach of the year honor for the California junior college category.
These awards recognize the efforts of coaches from the various NFCA membership categories for their tireless dedication to the sport of softball and to the continued education, growth and development of young women, both on and off the playing field, said organizers. The winners will be recognized Dec. 12 during the NFCA Convention’s awards brunch in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The winners were nominated by NFCA member coaches and voted for by a panel of their peers on the NFCA Awards Committee.
Aragon has been instrumental in the success of Feather River softball for over a decade, which includes a highly successful 2026 campaign. He is involved in all aspects of the program, serving as the recruiting coordinator, pitching coach and hitting instructor, overseeing the catchers, providing year-round field maintenance and assisting the college during the summer revamping of the dorms, said organizers.
Head coach Meredith Aragon said Marco Aragon has made a lasting impact on the FRC softball program through his unwavering commitment to student-athlete development, community engagement and growth of the sports. One of his most significant contributions has been his dedication to expanding the opportunities for young athletes, as he has organized and led numerous youth camps, clinics and instructional programs designed to make softball accessible to athletes of all backgrounds, said Meredith Aragon. Through partnerships with local schools, recreation programs and travel-ball organizations, he has helped create pathways for participation and development while inspiring the next generation of softball players.
