As Chester prepares for one of its busiest weekends of the year, the California Highway Patrol is reminding Fourth of July visitors that officers will be cracking down on impaired driving while also addressing safety concerns along the parade route.

CHP says additional officers will be on patrol throughout the holiday, with a strong focus on DUI enforcement. Motorists are urged to make plans for a sober ride home if they intend to celebrate with alcohol.

The agency is also asking spectators to wait until the day of the parade to set up chairs along Main Street. Each year, officers receive complaints about chairs being placed days in advance, blocking sidewalks and crosswalks. Officials say chairs or other items that create hazards for pedestrians, bicyclists, or people using mobility devices may be removed.

In addition to the enforcement efforts, travelers should expect temporary closures of State Route 36 through downtown Chester on Saturday. The highway will close from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. for the Fun Run and again from 10:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for the annual Fourth of July Parade. A detour for through traffic will be available via Airport Road and Melissa Avenue.

CHP says a little planning and consideration can help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and memorable Independence Day celebration.
