The Great Rotary Duck Race in Modoc County will not take place in 2026, organizers announced. This decision comes just one year after the event attracted a sold-out crowd.

The Rotary Clubs of Alturas and Alturas Sunrise made the joint announcement, citing state law compliance as the reason behind the cancellation.

Last year’s race sold out all 2,500 ducks and awarded a $10,000 grand prize to local winner Guy Axelrod. Local businesses like Ormat, Desert Rose Casino, and Alturas Tire sponsored additional prizes.

The event usually follows the Fandango Days parade and raises funds for Rotary Club community projects and youth programs.

The clubs thanked the local community and businesses for their ongoing support. They said the break is temporary and promised to bring the race back in the future.

What state law changes could affect local fundraisers like this one? How can communities adapt to keep traditions alive while following new regulations? Your thoughts could help shape the future of events in Modoc County.
