Construction has begun on the Happy Camp Complete Streets Project along State Route 96 in Siskiyou County in the town of Happy Camp.

This project is the result of a long-standing partnership between Caltrans and the Karuk Tribe, who have worked together for years to identify transportation needs in Happy Camp. This collaboration has helped to shape a project focused on making State Route 96 safer and more accessible for all users.

Improvements will include new curb, gutter and sidewalk, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps, bike lanes, improved pedestrian crossings, pedestrian (decorative) lighting, transit stop improvements, and other roadway enhancements designed to better serve people walking, biking, riding public transportation, and driving through town.

This work will help improve safety, accessibility and overall livability in the community while also addressing needed pavement and drainage upgrades along the state highway.

The project area spans from the Indian Creek Bridge to just east of Mill Road in and around the town of Happy Camp with crews currently working primarily in the area between Grayback Road and Second Avenue.

Crews are scheduled to work between the hours of 6am and 6pm. Motorists can expect minor traffic delays of up to seven minutes with one-way reversing traffic control with a pilot car. The Happy Camp Complete Streets Project is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2026.

Motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists are urged to use caution while traveling through the work zone.

Caltrans would like to thank the community for its patience and cooperation during construction.
