The Office of Assemblymember Heather Hadwick recently recognized several outstanding students from the 1st Assembly District who represented their schools and communities at the 20th annual California Poetry Out Loud state finals held at the state Capitol in Sacramento March 8 and 9.

Among these students was Paige Matlock, from Portola Junior-Senior High School, And Jacey Pontarola from Lassen High who joined five other youths from the region — as well as competitors from across the state — in the event.

Poetry Out Loud is a nationwide poetry recitation competition administered by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. Each year, high school students from across California advance through classroom, school and regional competitions to earn a place at the state finals, where they perform and celebrate the power of poetry.

Hadwick presented certificates of recognition to participating students from her district to commend their hard work, creativity and dedication to the arts.

“Congratulations to these talented students for representing our district so well,” said Hadwick. “We are proud of their hard work and the passion they bring to the arts. Opportunities like Poetry Out Loud help young people build confidence, creativity and a lifelong appreciation for literature.”
