Portola Residents Gain Expanded Access to Heat Pump Home Heating Incentive Program

Residents in and around Portola now have expanded access to a home heating incentive program.

The Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District announced that its Heat Pump Program, previously limited to the City of Portola and Zone 1A, is now available throughout Zone 1. The expanded area includes the city and surrounding neighborhoods within the Greater Portola PM2.5 Non-Attainment Area.

The program allows eligible homeowners to install a heat pump — often referred to as a mini-split system — as an additional source of heat while keeping their existing EPA-certified woodstove. Officials say the goal is to help reduce fine particulate emissions while maintaining reliable home heating options.

To qualify, residents must live within Zone 1 and have an EPA-certified woodstove registered with the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District. Those who have not yet registered their stove can do so by contacting the district directly.

Applications for the program are available on the district’s website at myairdistrict.com/portola-woodstove-change-out-program.
