Exciting news for travelers heading to Black Rock Desert! Washoe County Commissioners have approved a major rehabilitation project for a key segment of Washoe County Road 34, the main route to Burning Man.
Thanks to a $29 million grant from the Federal Lands Access Program, combined with $1.8 million in county funds, over $30 million will be invested to improve approximately nine miles of this vital corridor. Planned enhancements include pavement reconstruction, shoulder safety edges, intersection upgrades, and a new turn lane at the ‘eight mile’ entrance.
The project timeline spans several years: planning and design will occur over the next three years, with construction contracts awarded in late 2028 and completion targeted for early 2030. These improvements aim to enhance safety and accessibility for all visitors to the Black Rock Desert region.
