Two veteran Lassen County employees took the oath of office at 9 a.m. this morning in the Lassen County Board of Supervisors Chambers, succeeding Nancy Cardenas who retires Friday, Oct. 31.
Stephanie Hranac is the new Lassen County Auditor/Controller, and Taya Short is the new Lassen County Treasurer/Tax Collector. They were recently appointed by the Lassen County Board of Supervisors.
Friends, family and coworkers filled the chambers as Assistant County Clerk/Recorder Sarah Howe administered the oath of office.
Before administering the oath of office, Howe shared a brief history of the American oath of office to defend and protect the constitutions of both the United States and the state of California.
“The final step these officials must complete before assuming office is to take the oath of office,” Howe said. “Oaths of office and allegiance have been features of government for centuries. When the United States were colonies of Great Britain, officials swore allegiance to the king. Colonial and state legislatures also created oaths that required members to swear allegiance to the state. Article 6 of the United States Constitution establishes the supreme law of the land and indicates all executive and judicial officers both of the United States and the several states shall be bound by oath or affirmation to support the Constitution.”
