Amazon announced it is cutting 14,000 corporate jobs as it increasingly relies on artificial intelligence to boost efficiency and reduce costs. CEO Andy Jassy has emphasized that AI investments will enable the company to operate with a smaller human workforce. Senior VP Beth Galetti described the cuts as a move to help Amazon “operate like the world’s largest startup,” highlighting AI as the most transformative technology since the Internet.
Amazon plans to invest $10 billion in a new AI innovation campus in North Carolina, focusing on integrating AI into products like Alexa and e-commerce tools, as well as expanding its Amazon Web Services cloud computing business. Analysts view this shift as a significant move from human labor toward technological infrastructure.
Despite the corporate layoffs, Amazon remains one of the largest U.S. employers with about 1.5 million employees globally and plans to hire 250,000 seasonal workers for holiday warehouse and transportation roles. The cuts represent a substantial restructuring of Amazon’s corporate workforce amid its broader AI-driven transformation.
