Gilberto Mendoza and Julian Borhorquez went to war for the vacant Universal Boxing
Organization (UBO world Light Flyweight title on Saturday, July 19, at Las Estrella Polideportivo in
La Estrella, Colombia.
It was a classic encounter between the Experienced and battle-tested
veteran and a fast-tracked, young up-and-comer who stepped up in
class to find out if he has what it takes, and it turned out to be an
excellent match-up between two fighters with similar styles.
Both boxers were determined and relentless, boxing with impressive
work-rates which made it an all-action affair from start to finish, with
many rounds very close and difficult to score.
Mendoza, fighting out of All American Mixed Martial Arts Academy,
in Susanville California fractured his right collar bone, from end to
end, in the third round of the fight, making him a one armed fighter, but was amazingly able to finish
the fight using only his left in the remaining rounds.
Bohorquez, the younger man by ten years at twenty-five, was not able to capitalize on his opponents
injury, and Mendoza was effective with his left hooks, jabs and uppercuts. The Colombian Bohorquesz
never stopped trying to find a way but Mendoza used all his experience to pull through and bring home
the Championship.
It was a spit decision in the end and a very close and exciting fight. The camps have started talking
about a re-match but this time it would be for a WBA World Title. A representative from the WBA has
already reached out. This rematch if it happens would be in the United States.
Mendoza, is planning a personal appearance circuit at select Lassen County locations with free
autographs and photo opportunities to the public. Listen to your favorite channel for locations and dates
